Question 6

  • Last year I noticed a large patch of garlic mustard at a Boy Scout camp in western Kenosha/Racine Counties. We have made arrangements with the ranger to allow an eradication effort ..., using several troops.
Are there any technical advisors or other training materials available that would help us train 30 people in proper identification and removal technique? If this is successful, it is hoped that an Eagle Scout project would blossom to do an eradication at ... In that latter event, are there experts who can help us convince administration of the necessity?

Answer 6.

The DNR has good information on their website on this species, and control efforts http://dnr.wi.gov/invasives/fact/garlic.htm

You can also access online and print out a garlic mustard fact sheet from UW-Extension. That's at www.uwex.edu/ces/wihort/ and you should click on garden fact sheets (x-files) and scroll down to garlic mustard. They also have fact sheets on dame's rocket, wild parsnip and purple loosestrife.

You might also call the UW-Extension office in Racine to see if they have any garlic mustard brochures left, or DNR wildcards (small, wallet size identification cards) You can also order wildcards from the DNR, Bureau of Endangered Resources by contacting Tim Cooke - 608-266-7012. They usually come in lots of 100, if you don't need that many, just tell him and he can send out a special order. Make sure to tell him which cards you want.

I have several suggestions for "experts" in your area who might help you make the case to UW-Parkside or other property owners.

Also, Lee Krueger is a DNR Garlic Mustard Control Coordinator. I think he's in West Bend. However, he gets around, so he might be available. The last time I got his schedule he was working MWF mornings and was at 262-338-0539. His email is turtle@connect.net

Good luck with your work!
