The LTE will provide specific tasks related to Door County’s invasive species. The LTE will work under the direction of the SWCD with additional guidance from the Door County Invasive Species Team (DCIST). Period of employment is expected to be late May 2012 to late August 2012 or potentially longer. Pay rate will be approximately $12.54 per hour for up to 40 hours per week. The Baraboo Hills land Steward position will be a member of the Baraboo Hills Project, office located in Baraboo Hills, Wisconsin. This position will conduct preserve and natural area stewardship work throughout Sauk County and occasional work throughout southern Wisconsin. The Baraboo Hills are an oak dominated system representing significant biological diversity and is well-known in Wisconsin and beyond for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Successful candidates will implement preserve management plans which may include species monitoring and research, invasive species control, forest management, boundary posting, trail and/or equipment maintenance, field trip coordination and lead volunteer stewardship workdays, participate on prescribed fires, and monitor easements. Position will have significant interaction with public, community and other conservation partners. This position is full time for six months, mid-April – mid-October.

Position Description: The Invasive Species Ecologist is responsible for implementing on-the-ground invasive species control within the context of large- and small-scale ecological restoration and rehabilitation projects. Depending on the applicant’s qualifications, the Invasive Species Ecologist may also assist in the development of management plans and strategies for invasive species, mapping projects, and invasive species research projects. A typical work day consists of 7 – 10 hours with a paid lunch. A limited amount of weekend work may also be required.
Minimum Qualifications: Qualified applications MUST have a valid driver’s license and reliable motorized transportation. Basic understanding of fundamental ecological and invasive species concepts with associated scientific literacy. Intermediate mechanical skills. Basic understanding of herbicide and additive chemistry. Basic mathematical skills, including a working knowledge of algebra. MUST be able to consistently (and safely) lift up to 30 lbs for extended time periods. MUST be able to work both independently or as a member of a coordinated team. Certified Pesticide Applicator in a suitable category (or must demonstrate progress toward obtaining certification within 15 days or hire). Be able to work outdoors, possibly in uncomfortable weather conditions. Experience operating or working near heavy equipment. Previous experience in forestry, landscaping, agriculture, carpentry, or similar line of physicallydemanding work.
Desired Qualifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Botany, Biology, Forestry, or a related field. Experience with surveying techniques, cartography, aerial photo interpretation, and groundtruthing. Experience with herbicide applications and record keeping. Experience with off-road driving. Experience with calibration, operation, and safety protocols for spray equipment. Fluency in ecological restoration jargon and terminology. Basic understanding of the principles of scientific problem solving and logical reasoning.

The Savanna Oak Foundation has two internships available for next summer in ecological restoration. The interns will work with an experienced restoration crew at Pleasant Valley Conservancy and Black Earth Rettenmund Prairie, both outstanding Wisconsin State Natural Areas. Position Description: Rhode Island’s 400 miles of coastline include coastal wildlife habitat as well as public beaches, walking trails, shoreline cliffs, and historical lighthouses. New England’s coastal habitat currently faces a number of threats including aggressive exotic invasive plant species. Interns will carry out much needed control of invasive plants threatening coastal shrub-scrub and salt-marsh habitat, which are critical to migrating and breeding birds, as well as many other species of wildlife. Control methods include hand-pulling, herbicide application, and cutting and digging with hand tools. Duties also include conducting annual monitoring of rare plants such as Agalinis acuta (sandplain gerardia) and Platanthera ciliaris (yellow-fringed orchid), and habitat mapping using GPS technology. Qualifications: Applicants must possess excellent field botany skills, and have the ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, especially heat and humidity, endure biting insects, and to work well with others. Must be a team player and willing to work on other biological program projects such as Piping Plover protection and monitoring. Additionally, applicants must be in good physical shape and be able to hike long distances while carrying tools and bagged plants, and possess a valid driver’s license. Experience using GPS units or GIS is a plus. Duration: Two positions available from May 29 to August 24. There is the possibility of a position extending through November 2 depending upon funding and job performance. If extended, responsibilities will also include assisting with mist-netting and banding of fall migratory songbirds and shrub land vegetation surveys. Salary: Compensation $215/wk plus possibility of housing. This is technical support and manual work in relationship to the City's Conservation Parks. This work involves the performance of a wide variety of conservation parks and facilities maintenance and construction activities in maintaining, restoring, and land management of 2000 acres of conservation park land; cross-country ski trail grooming and maintenance; and minor maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Conservation Resources Supervisor. Employees in this class may also provide direction to seasonal/hourly employees.
USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station, Morgantown, WV Job Title: Field Technicians/Botanists (3 positions) Series and Grade: 0404 and GS 3 or 4, Temporary (about $10.46 -- $11.78/hr) Location (Duty Station): Morgantown, WV Time Period: Mid-May – mid August, 2012, possible extensions through September
Duties: The selected persons will assist in surveying 56 research plots for three invasive plant species. The goal of this project is to evaluate invasive species growth and survival in sites with 1) no treatment, 2) prescribed burn, 3) shelterwood harvest, and 4) diameter-limit harvest, all with and without deer herbivory control. The research plots are located in WV, OH, and VA. A second project will require re-sampling 30 closed-canopy forests in WV that are 90+ years old. A third project consists of re-sampling the understory vegetation at three sites in northern PA. These sites are part of an experiment testing for the effects of fencing, fire, herbicide, and harvesting on understory plants.
While botanical and taxonomic skills are not required, a strong interest in understory vegetation is necessary. Good orienteering skills are desired. There may be a need to re-establish some plots which could require carrying relatively heavy equipment. Those selected may also help with greenhouse/growth chamber/common garden studies, enter data, and mount herbarium specimens. The selected persons must be willing to relocate to Morgantown, WV. They must also be a licensed driver, willing to travel extensively (with reimbursement and in provided government vehicles), and able to drive 4WD vehicles. Willingness to work in rough terrain and in over-grown vegetation with the possibility of encountering insects, ticks, snakes, and black bears, as well as in all kinds of weather is required. The persons should also work well independently as well as with others.
